Roughing end mills seem to work best. I've found used bridgeports from $500 to $1500, ideally you want one that comes with tooling. They are easy to learn how to use, and you'll find a bunch of other stuff to make with it. Otherwise tube coping machines (belt sander style) work great, you might be able to find a used one for a good price.

Sharpening end mills by grinding off the bottom never made sense to me, rarely are we plunging, most cutting is with the side. Of course the idea with bottom sharpening is remove enough off the bottom to get to a 'fresh' bit of side, but lobbing off 1/2" with a zip cutter then tuning up the end seemed wasteful.

Using these on various hardwoods on a cnc mill, they seem to hold an edge nearly as long as other average uncoated end mills. Ran a few of them now on a full day of cutting and they "squeak" a bit more than my other end mills, might be the flute angle.. but at 1/5 the price for nearly the same cutter life seems like a good option for milling wood.

It will go around curves too. I made the flanger also.( the flanger was way fun. I had to make a holder to put a die grinder on my lathe tool post,(live tooling, mikey style), so I could modify a 5/8" end mill so I could cut the T shaped die block that fit over the jaws on the vise grips.
