Share. Posted June 11, 2009 (edited) with the encouragement of Dave Stephens i have started building several roller mills based on Hugh McDonald's design. I am going to build several extra of the parts that require mill work or lathe work if anybody else is interested. I have re done the orignial plans to all english dimensions and parts.

You might look into a rolling mill. Google "Hughe McDonald rolling mill", he was an austrailian fellow who designed and published plans for a roll forging machine specifically for damascus. Briefly Kayne and sons built and sold the machine but there was some sort of legal scuffle over it and the whole thing kind of fizzled.

the roller is not braced yet so it took it easy and was very pleased with the results. also i have to move the mill near the forge for obvious reasons. next step will be to cut off a piece of W2 and use tongs so it can be turned end for end in the roller mill.

The pieces in the tongs are 3/4"x1/4"and have been bent and scarfed ready for fluxing while the legs in front have been welded, side tapered then rolled out in my Roller Mill to 3/16" thick.
